After completing intense training, two Navy SEAL candidates were rushed to the hospital. According to FOX5, one of them died at Sharp Coronado on Friday afternoon (February 4).
On Monday, February 7, the U.S. Navy confirmed the deceased candidate as 24-year-old Seaman Kyle Mullen from Manalapan, New Jersey.
The two candidates and their Basic Underwater Demolition Seal Training (BUD/S) had just completed what is referred to as "Hell Week."
“It is a miserable time, it is well-named,” said Paul Anderson, a retired Navy Seal Chief. “It’s a gut check. You get approximately four hours of sleep the whole week. You are constantly doing physical evolutions whether it’s physical obstacles, going in and out of the surf zone with your boats, running, you are constantly wet and you are always sandy.”
According to Navy officials, the sailors reported symptoms shortly after completing the training. They have not yet provided specific details about Mullen's symptoms and what caused them.
FOX5 reports an investigation is now underway.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Seaman Mullen’s family for their loss,” said Rear Adm. H.W. Howard III with Naval Special Warfare Command. “We are extending every form of support we can to the Mullen family and Kyle’s BUD/S classmates.”
