When it comes to all that is heavy, Slash agrees that no band epitomizes the genre more than Black Sabbath.

The Guns N' Roses icon pointed to Sabbath's 1970 debut album and its chilling title song as one of the records that had the "biggest impact" on him as a child. Not only was Black Sabbath a revolutionary band in rock, its debut marked a dramatic aesthetic shift from everything else in music at the time.

Slash was hooked immediately, he recalled in a recent radio interview.

“When you think about it, in the landscape of all the other music that was happening at the time, there's this one dark record that comes out that really created what you would consider dark heavy metal and created the path for everything that was to follow," he said. "And so yeah, that record is especially poignant.”

He added that Sabbath's fifth album, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, ranks high on his list. Again, he singled out the title track.

"That breakdown towards the end of the song, there's just nothing that's ever come out that's heavier than that. Not one band that I can think of has a riff that is as heavy as 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.'"

Slash is on tour now promoting his latest album, 4, with Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators.
