Tax season is upon us! In preparation for the 2022 tax deadline of Monday, April 18, GoBankingRates released a report of the average IRS tax refund amount by state.

Here's some advice the website gave for filing your taxes: "Generally, the sooner you file your taxes, the sooner you’ll see your refund in the bank (and it reduces the chances of tax fraud). The amount that you receive — if any — depends on a number of factors, including how much of your income isn’t subject to tax withholding, how many deductions and credits you claim, and how you filled out your W-4, which is the form your employer uses to determine how much to withhold from your paycheck for income taxes."

According to the website, the average federal tax refund for individuals during the 2021 filing season was $2,184. So how does California's average tax refund stack up to the national average?

Based on their data, California's average tax refund is about $79 lower than the national average, coming in at $2,105 for the 2020 fiscal year. Around 33,888,281 Californians received a refund after filing their taxes.

The state with the highest average refund issued per return was Iowa at $2,537, and the lowest amount was in Pennsylvania which had an average refund of $1,833.
