Driverless cars are slowly starting to take over the streets of San Francisco. In February, self-driving tech startup Cruise started allowing members of the public to sign up for rides in their self-driving taxis. Now, a video has surfaced of a driverless car being pulled over by the San Francisco Police Department earlier this month.
According to KTLA, the stop took place on Friday, April 1 in the Richmond District. In the footage, an officer is seen getting out of his vehicle to approach the Cruise taxi. He tries to open the door with no success. When the officer turns to walk back to his patrol car, the Cruise takes off, crosses an intersection, and then comes to another stop.
Two officers then get out of the patrol car to approach the vehicle. Cruise actually provided a statement to KRON4 that explained why the vehicle was pulled over. Apparently, the car did not have its headlights on due to a human error. A member from the company's communications team said "the vehicle yielded to the police car, then pulled over across the intersection which was the nearest safe location for a traffic stop.”
Cruise also tweeted in response to a bystander's video of the incident writing: "An officer contacted Cruise personnel and no citation was issued."
Chiming in with more details: our AV yielded to the police vehicle, then pulled over to the nearest safe location for the traffic stop, as intended. An officer contacted Cruise personnel and no citation was issued.
