David Bowie's estate sanctioned the first ever film about his life several years ago.

Now, the movie, Moonage Daydream, is finished and could be screened for the first time next month at the Cannes Film Festival, Variety reports.

A worldwide release via HBO likely have to wait until early-2023, about five years after director Brett Morgen began work on the project. No theatrical release has been announced.

Morgen is perhaps best known for the 2015 Kurt Cobain movie, Montage of Heck, which was sanctioned by Cobain's family.

For Moonage Daydream, Morgen was given "unfiltered access to Bowie's personal archives." He reportedly unearthed hundreds of hours of never-before-seen 35mm and 16mm footage. That footage was assembled and will be presented in the film for the first time ever.

Longtime Bowie producer Tony Visconti also worked on the film, which is said to include 48 Bowie songs delivered unlike a typical documentary or biography.

Morgen says his goal was "to create an artful and life-affirming film that takes the audience on a journey through Bowie's creative life."
