A man in Southern California was killed after he became pinned between his car and machinery inside an automatic car wash near San Diego, reports NBC Los Angeles. The 56-year-old man was trapped outside his car at a self-service car wash in Escondido, according to Sgt. Chris Leso with the Escondido Police Department.

A preliminary investigation suggested that the man drove into the car wash and then tried to exit his vehicle for an unknown reason. The car rolled forward and pinned the man between the car and the machinery. It's reported that the car wash had not been activated at the time of the collision.

Lt. Scot Walters told NBC News that the car lurched forward and pinned the man to a column that houses the large rolling brushes when it's not in use. After an alarm went off, a person nearby found the man outside his car and called the police. Officers arrived and lifted the vehicle to free the man. CPR was administered and the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

According to NBCLA, investigators are reviewing videos to find out why the man got out of his car and how he became trapped. The man was not immediately identified.
