A series of earthquakes struck Tuesday afternoon (April 19) east of San Diego County, near Brawley, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Within the same hour, three quakes were reported:
- a 3.6 preliminary magnitude earthquake was reported at 1:22 P.M.
- followed by a 3.7 preliminary magnitude quake at 1:30 P.M.
- and a 2.7 preliminary magnitude earthquake reported at 1:51 P.M.
The first two quakes struck a few miles outside the city of Brawley in Imperial County and the third that followed was only a couple of miles away from the first pair, according to FOX5. Earlier that day, there was also a 2.8 magnitude earthquake reported in the same area at 11:15 A.M.
In a tweet, USGS said their Shake Alert system was activated by the 3.7-magnitude earthquake, which was initially reported as having a magnitude of 4.3. The agency said while the other quakes were too small to trigger the USUGS alert system to send out cell phone notifications, actions like opening firehouse doors still could have occurred.
Based on the USGS intensity map, shaking would not have been felt from the earthquake for most of San Diego. There were also no immediate reports of damages or injuries during the string of earthquakes.
