US Is Not In 'Full-Blown' Pandemic Phase Anymore, According To Dr. Fauci

According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US is officially out of the "full-blown" pandemic phase of the coronavirus. Fauci, who serves as the Chief Medical Advisor to the President, made the declaration Wednesday (April 27) according to The Washington Post.

"We're really in a transitional phase, from a deceleration of the numbers into hopefully a more controlled phase and endemicity," Fauci told The Post, just one day after telling PBS News Hour he believed the country is "out of the pandemic phase."

Fauci clarified the remarks Wednesday (April 27) noting that the Covid-19 pandemic is not over and that the country could even see an increase in Covid-19 infections in the future. However, the coronavirus isn't causing the same level of hospitalizations and death we've seen over the last two years.

"The world is still in a pandemic. There's no doubt about that," Fauci said. "Don't anybody get any misinterpretation about that. We are still experiencing a pandemic."

"There's the full-blown pandemic dynamic, the way we were months ago, where we were having 900,000 cases a day, tens of thousands of hospitalizations, three thousand deaths a day," Fauci noted. "The deaths went from 3,000 to 300."

Even with the rise of the new Omicron subvariants –– BA.2 and BA.2.21.1 –– Fauci believes, "Right now we're at a low enough level that I believe that we're transitioning into endemicity. ... A pandemic means widespread infection throughout the world. ... In our country we're transitioning into more of a controlled endemicity."
