U2's Bono, The Edge Perform For Ukrainian's In Kyiv Bomb Shelter

U2 frontman Bono and guitarist The Edge offered support for Ukraine this past weekend with an intimate live performance from a Kyiv subway station.

The station is currently being used as a bomb shelter, as Russia continues its assault on the city.

"President Zelensky invited us to perform in Kyiv as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and so that's what we've come to do," the duo announced via Twitter on Sunday morning. They concluded the post with the hashtag #StandWithUkraine.

The acoustic performance in the bunker marks U2's longest public performance since December of 2019. Bono and The Edge delivered a roughly 40-minute set to an audience of about 100 people.

"The people in Ukraine are not just fighting for your own freedom, you are fighting for all of us who love freedom," Bono reportedly told the audience. "We pray that you will enjoy some of that peace soon."

The duo also performed Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" with Ukrainian singer Taras Topolia. After the song, Bono allowed Topolia to deliver a message to the rest of the world.

"I'm asking you to help our president and our diplomacy to extract Ukraine's soldiers from Mariupol," Topolia said, referring to the besieged southern Ukrainian city.
