Miners in South Africa have unearthed a rare diamond, the likes of which haven't been seen in more than 300 years.

Workers found a 170-carat pink diamond in the Lulo alluvial diamond mine, the Lucapa Diamond Company announced on Wednesday. "Only one in 10,000 diamonds is colored pink," says Lucapa CEO Stephen Wetherall. "So you’re certainly looking at a very rare article when you find a very large pink diamond." In fact, a pink diamond that size hasn't been discovered in more than 300 years, he adds.

Since workers have been digging in the mine, they've found 27 diamonds of 100 carats or more, Wetherall says.
