It's been a long road back to the road for Billy Idol, between the pandemic and his own ill-timed health problems, but a year after dropping his acclaimed Roadside EP, Billy is back with more inspired new music on "Cage."

Speaking with Q104.3 New York's Jim Kerr, Billy described "Cage" as a "pandemic anthem" of sorts, but that doesn't mean he didn't have the time of his life writing and recording the track.

"I'm particularly proud of this EP we've got coming out and this song in particular," Idol said of "Cage." "It just came together as so much fun to do ... and I think it's reflected in the recording, the way it sounds and everything."

Billy, longtime collaborator Steve Stevens and their band began writing again last December. The sessions were cathartic because they got a chance to reflect on the past year-plus with cancelled concerts and lockdowns.

The band recorded the new EP and Billy promptly fell ill with a MRSA infection that persisted for months and forced him to cancel his spring tour dates.

Billy stayed positive through it all, and he eventually got back on tour this summer, with more U.S. dates coming next spring. Knowing that the EP was finished, and that it was good, helped buoy his mood through his recovery.

"We just knew we had something really good," he added. "I don't mind waiting, because when we do get there, it's great."
