Catalytic converter thefts have been on the rise and Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed new bills to make it harder for people to steal and sell them in California. Catalytic converters can be stolen quickly and the precious metals it's made with are usually sold as scrap for hundreds of dollars at recycling facilities.

According to ABC 7, Senate Bill 1087 and Assembly Bill 1740 will make it illegal to buy parts from anyone who isn't a licensed auto dismantler or dealer. Scrap metal recyclers and junk dealers must keep detailed records of their sales under these new laws.
