According to the National Storm Center Hurricane Ian, a Category 4 hurricane with winds close to 150 mph, made landfall in the southwest coast of Florida at Cayo Costa Wednesday, September 28.
- The storm produced massive power outages and floods across central Florida.
- Ian knocked out power for some 2 million customers and racked up very early estimates for $16 billion in damage to the Tampa area.
- It is bringing the state a devastating trifecta of high winds, heavy rain, and a historic storm surge.
- Hurricane Ian is tied for being the strongest hurricane to ever make landfall on the west coast of the Florida peninsula, with Hurricane Charley from 2004.
- Ian will rank among the top five storms to have hit the Florida peninsula, behind Hurricanes Andrew (1992) and Michael (2018), according to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Tuesday, September 27.
This morning Sheriff Carmine Marceno took a tour of Lee County to begin assessing damage caused by Hurricane Ian.

A chunk of the Sanibel Causeway has collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico. This is the only way on and off the island of Sanibel. That means anyone who didn’t evacuate is stuck for now. #HurricaneIanupdate #HurricanIan pic.twitter.com/hAYQQHcLMM
