Billy Ray Cyrus & Fiancée Firerose Share More Engagement Details

Billy Ray Cyrus and Firerose recently confirmed their engagement after stirring speculation with snapshots showing a dazzling diamond ring on their social media channels, and now, the singer-songwriter couple is sharing the story behind the ring.

Cyrus, 61, and Firerose, 34, opened up about their engagement story to PEOPLE. They shared that the 18k white gold engagement ring, complete with diamond accents around the centerpiece stone, was designed by Firerose after an informal proposal.

"It was really just this moment where Billy looked at me and said 'Do you wanna marry me?' He didn't get down on one knee or anything," Firerose said as she reflected on that moment with PEOPLE. "He said, 'I love you. I wanna make this official. I wanna be with you forever.' …It wasn’t even a question for me.”

Cyrus and Firerose met one another about 12 years ago, while Cyrus was working on the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana, starring his daughter Miley Cyrus, now 29. The two stayed in contact over the years, and Cyrus told PEOPLE that their relationship “just evolved more into, as musical soulmates, to soulmates, happy, pure love that to me, I didn't know could exist. Again, we're musicians, first and foremost, both of us. And we found this harmony, and this rhythm, this melody to life.”
