House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she will not seek reelection for Speaker of the House or run for other leadership positions in the Democratic Party next year. Pelosi, who was just elected to her 19th term, will remain in Congress and continue "speaking for the people of San Francisco."

"Now we must move boldly into the future," Pelosi said on the floor of the House of Representatives. "The hour's come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus."

Pelosi was elected to Congress in 1987 and became the first woman to be elected Speaker of the House in 2007. She held the position until Republicans took control of the House in 2011. She was reelected in 2019 when Democrats regained control of the chamber.

Pelosi's announcement comes one day after the Republican Party gained enough seats to claim the majority in the 118th Congress that convenes in January. Kevin McCarthy was elected as the Republican nominee for Speaker. The Democrats have not said who will oppose him.
