Records and officials have confirmed that Kyle Jacobs, praised songwriter who was married to country star Kellie Pickler, died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 49.

A spokesperson for the Davidson Country Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the cause of death to E! News on Tuesday (May 9), after some outlets obtained an autopsy, which reportedly showed that Jacobs did not have drugs in his system at the time of his death on February 17.

Metro Nashville Police Department officials confirmed at that time that Jacobs had apparently died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Responding officers stated that Pickler was asleep at the time of the incident. She couldn’t find him when she woke up, and dialed 911 with a personal assistant when they were unable to open the bedroom door in the couple's Nashville home.

Pickler, 36, and Jacobs married in 2011. Jacobs was a songwriter, vocalist and musician known for his work with some of the genre’s biggest artists. Many singer-songwriters took part in an outpouring of tributes following Jacobs’ death in February, including Russell Dickerson, Brett Young, Jana Kramer and Lee Brice, who wrote in a heartbreaking statement that Jacobs “was, without a doubt, one of the best people anyone could ever hope to have in their corner…I am eternally grateful for having him in mine.”
