Los Angeles Measure Could Require Air Conditioning In All Rental Units

L.A. City Council voted 13-0 to spark all residential rental units with cooling devices as a requirement. They also, tossed the idea of creating "low- and middle-income" programs that could help with the costly bill payments due to the usage of air conditioners.

• District 1 Councilwoman, Eunisses Hernandez, "presented the motion, which instructed the city's Housing Department and Department of Building and Safety to report on potential code amendments to require cooling apparatus in all residential rental units."
• In the motion, Hernandez said, “at this point in the climate emergency, the ability to cool one's home cannot be considered a luxury and rather must be treated as a necessity."
• Hernandez directed the Housing Department to conduct two case studies to buildings prior to the 1980s with the efforts to gather an estimate towards the installing of central air conditioning and wall units.
