The Motor City is many things, and "ratty" is certainly one of them. No, we're not talking about the iconic Rat Pack, but rather, an infestation of furry creatures known for carrying diseases and damaging property. While many cities are known for housing an abundance of these rodents, Detroit continues to top the list!
Orkin entomologist Ben Hottel explained how rats can easily get into public spaces and multiply.
“Rodents multiply swiftly and when an infestation is left unattended, they can cause extensive damage to homes and yards. Rats are capable of squeezing into spaces through holes as small as a quarter, which makes it especially important to seal cracks from the outside.”
According to a list compiled by Orkin, Detroit ranked as the 9th rattiest city in America this year, moving up one place from last year, and Grand Rapids ranked as the 25th. Other cities on the list include Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and more.
Here's what Orkin had to say about compiling the data to discover the rattiest cities across the country:
"Cities on the Rattiest Cities List are based on the number of new rodent services showcasing the demand and also indicate the efforts that residents and businesses of the top cities have taken to treat rodent issues. Orkin ranked metro regions by the number of new rodent treatments performed from Sept.1, 2022, to Aug. 31, 2023. This ranking includes both residential and commercial pest control treatments."
