The councilman, known for his activism and outspoken nature at public meetings, passed away due "to natural causes after an illness" on Saturday (February 24), according to local news station ABC 12 News.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Flint City Councilman Eric Mays," the City of Flint shared on Facebook. "A third-term councilman, he was beloved for his bold and courageous service on behalf of Flint’s First Ward, and his strong presence will be deeply missed. Our prayers are with his family, friends, and the entire city of Flint during this time of sorrow."

One of his most famous quotes being, "When they go low, I go lower... and so far, it's been working." He also gained public recognition for being one of the most vocal advocates for justice amidst the Flint water crisis.

“This is a tremendous loss for our community and a shock to all friends and family,” Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said in a statement. “As our community grieves during this difficult time, on behalf of Councilman Mays’ family, we ask that community members respect their privacy and allow them time and space to mourn. We continue to lift the family in prayer.”
