Plant of the Week - April 20th - Calamint

April 19, 2024

This week, I’m thinking perennials and perennials that are outstanding magnets for pollinators. And I must look no farther than the 2021 Perennial of the Year, chosen by the members of the Perennial Plant Association. It’s Calamintha nepeta subspecies nepeta. Or commonly known as Calamint.

Hardy to Zone 5, this tough native perennial is perfect for a low mounding or bushy type perennial for the front of the border, rock gardens, meadow gardens, and much more. Durable, pest free, undemanding, dependable and is very drought tolerant once established.

But wait, there’s more! You see I did not mention the green foliage covered with tiny white flowers, sometimes touched with pale blue, all summer long! And those tiny white flowers that look like a cloud of confetti…they are huge pollinator magnets! I mean huge!!! Butterflies included. And, adding one more thing…the foliage is minty aromatic and very low to no deer browse. That’s why it was the 2021 winner!
