Authorities in Midland, Michigan, said that a homeless woman had been living inside the sign above a supermarket for over a year. The woman, nicknamed the "rooftop ninja," was discovered by contractors who were working on the roof at Family Fare Supermarket.

"(The contractors) had seen an extension cord leading from one of the rooftop units to this particular sign where she had been living," Brennon Warren, spokesperson for the Midland Police Department, told USA TODAY.

When officers went inside the five-foot by eight-foot structure, they were shocked at what they found. The woman had laid down flooring and set up a computer, printer, and Keurig coffee machine.

Warren said that the woman voluntarily left her makeshift home and was not charged by officers.

"We provided her with some information about services in the area," the officer said. "She apologized and continued on her way. Where she went from there, I don't know."

The store is in contact with the woman so she can remove some of the belongings she left behind.
