Foo Fighters wrapped up a string of US tour dates at the Welcome to Rockville festival over the weekend and decided to go out with a (head)bang. Dave Grohl decided to pull a prank on fans with the help of Wolfgang Van Halen, whose band Mammoth WVH also played the festival.

After performing a medley that consisted of a guitar solo followed by snippets of Beastie Boys‘ "Sabotage," Ramones‘ "Blitzkrieg Bop," and Nine Inch Nails‘ "March of the Pigs," Grohl took to the mic to gripe about never getting to play a solo himself. “You know who never gets a f***in’ solo?" he asked the crowd. "Me, god d***it, I never get a f***ing solo! So, since this is the last night of the trip, I’m gonna do a f***ing solo. How about that? You may think, ‘That guy can’t play a f***ing solo.’ You wanna see me do a guitar solo right now?”

The crowd cheered him on as Grohl seemingly dove into the tap-solo of Van Halen's "Eruption." It looked like he was actually playing, until he lifted both his hands in the air and the solo continued. The camera then panned offstage, where Wolfie was shredding the solo. “Dude, I told you to keep that cool, Wolfie! What the f*** are you doing right now?" Grohl joked. "Everybody, give it up for Wolfgang Van Halen.”

Wolfie then walked onstage and started playing "Hot For Teacher" before Grohl put a stop to it, declaring if they start playing Van Halen songs they'll never stop. After the shenanigans were over, the frontman got serious and dedicated "My Hero" to Wolfie and his late, great dad Eddie Van Halen.

The Foos plan to return stateside this summer for a massive stadium tour. See fan-shot footage of the prank below.
