Scotty McCreery knows George Strait is “the King for a reason.”

McCreery caught up with Southern Living Editor-in-Chief Sid Evans on the latest episode of Biscuits & Jam. The “Damn Strait” artist called in from his home state of North Carolina as he caught up with Evans about growing up singing in his church choir, his Puerto Rican heritage, his inspiration for “Cab In A Solo,” an artist he hopes to duet with someday and more throughout the podcast conversation that arrived on Tuesday (May 14).

While speaking about writing “Damn Strait” as a tribute to the legendary country star, McCreery reflected on Strait’s career-spanning classics that offer something “for everybody.” The former American Idol champ von noted which Strait song describes the love story he shares with wife Gabi. The couple met in elementary school, and eventually began dating and got married in June 2018. They’ve since welcomed one child together, son Merrick Avery McCreery, who goes by Avery. He was born in October 2022.

“I think George had a way of having a song for everybody. He was everybody's country singer and he had a song if you were feeling sad. He had a song if you wanted to dance with your honey. He had a song for the cowboys and he just seemed the ultimate cowboy…Me and my wife met in elementary school and you hear a song like ‘Check Yes or No’ – to me, that's kind of our story. And I feel like everybody has a George Strait song that they can listen to, and be like, ‘Man, that sounds like me. That's our story.’ And I think that's the mark of a great artist and true country singer right there. Real guys and girls telling real stories.”

McCreery’s Biscuits & Jam interview arrives shortly after he released his fifth studio album, Rise & Fall. the album made its highly-anticipated debut on Friday (May 10), including a few that quickly became fan-favorites ahead of the project’s release: “Cab In A Solo,” “Can’t Pass The Bar,” “Love Like This” and others.
