Over Half Of Black Women Live In States With Limited To No Abortion Access

More than half of Black women of reproductive age live in states that have banned abortion access or have plans to do so.

The National Partnership for Women & Families (NPWF) and the organization In Our Own Voice released a joint report on Wednesday (May 15) detailing how Black women are disproportionally affected by abortion restrictions across the country, per NBC News.

According to the report, 57 percent of Black women ages 15 to 49 live with limited to no access to abortion or in states planning to implement restrictions.

Black women in those states are also "overwhelmingly" concerned about physical and economic security, Jocelyn Frye, president of the NPWF, said in a statement. According to the report, 2.7 million Black women of reproductive age living in states with limited abortion access are already "economically insecure." 1.4 million of these women also work in service jobs, less likely to provide resources like paid sick days and flexible scheduling.

“In addition to abortion bans, they’re also concerned about things like economic opportunity and cost of living, racial justice, which are directly tied to the abortion bans,” Frye said.

The report comes two after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, abortion has been banned in 14 states and restricted in 11.
