A New York woman was arrested after officers found her two-year-old son living in a dirty makeshift cage, the New York State Police said in a statement posted on Thursday (May 16). Officers made the shocking discovery while serving a search warrant at the home of 24-year-old Naesha Lumpkin.

The officers found Lumpkin's two-year-old son living in "a play pen that was covered by a piece of a crib tied down on three side to the top not allowing the child to stand or exit the play pen."

The child was covered in fecal matter, which was also smeared on the walls, and soaked with urine.

The child was taken to the hospital, where a medical examination revealed several injuries, including two broken ribs that likely occurred two weeks prior.

Lumpkin was taken into custody and was charged with child endangerment. She was also arraigned on the felony charge stemming from the warrant.

Authorities did not provide any updates on the condition of the child.
