Andrew Abbott was dynamite, spinning seven innings of shutout baseball. The Reds offense produced just three hits and two runs, but Abbott and two relievers made them stand up. The Padres managed just five hits. The Reds snapped a seven game home losing streak and move to 20-28.
Abbott: 7 IN, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K, 92 pitches/59 strikes. ERA at 2.68.
He recorded four one pitch outs and two two pitch outs.
That's nine times in 10 starts he's allowed 2 earned runs or fewer....T-ML lead.
Last four starts: 5 earned runs (1.88). Third start of seven innings.
Bullpen:
8th Fernando Cruz: 0 R. He'd allowed runs in 3 of his last 4 appearances, 4 of 6 and 5 of 9.
9th Alexis Diaz: Made it interesting. Walked the leadoff batter on four pitches to bring tying run to the plate. K, DP. 9 pitch inning.
Offense: 3 H, 4 BB, 6 K. Both runs scored in the 2nd. 11 in a row retired into the 8th.
Will Benson: H, BB, R
Elly: 2 H, 2B, RBI, snapped an 0 for 13 skid.
Leading man: Leading off for the 1st time, Jacob Hurtubise worked 7 pitch BB to open the game and added a 7 pitch fly to left in which India tagged and scored when the ball was dropped at the plate.
Seriously? Jake Fraley left the game after HBP on his hand. Stuart Fairchild replaced him. Reds said initial X-rays were negative for a fracture, but he will be examined again tomorrow. Jonathan India injured his lower leg scoring in a collision at the plate. He limped to the dugout, but remained in the game.
Ticked: David Bell smashed/slammed a chair in the dugout between innings after Fraley was forced to exit.
Cut down: Tyler Stephenson threw out a would be base stealer.
Nope: Reds loaded the bases in 1st: BB, 1B, HBP....Candelario K, Stephenson K, Ford GO.
I wonder: How many players are getting HBP on the hand in MLB? It sure seems like batters are not as quick to bail on inside pitches as they used to. Is it the arm/hand guards providing false sense of protection?
