A Florida deputy had to smash the window of a car to rescue a child who was locked inside. The Flagler County Sheriff's Office said they received a 911 call on Monday (May 20) from a woman who said her daughter had been accidentally locked inside a car.

When officers arrived, the child's father explained that he had just strapped the one-year-old in her car seat and gone around to the other side of the car. As he did, he realized his keys were in the car, and the doors were locked.

He told officers the child had been in the vehicle for about ten minutes while the temperature outside approached 80 degrees. The deputies decided to break the window because they noticed the young girl was "sweating and appearing to be in distress."

Body camera video released by the department shows the officer using shatter balls to break the rear passenger side window. After clearing the glass, the girl was removed from the vehicle. Paramedics examined the girl and said she was okay.

"Thanks to the quick response of our deputies, this child was safely rescued, and a tragic incident was avoided," said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. "Although this was an accident, I would like to take this time to remind parents of the dangers of leaving a child in a parked car at any time, especially if it is not running. Heatstroke can happen very quickly, even if it does not seem that hot outside. Remember, if it has a heartbeat, do not leave them in your car."
