This past weekend, Vermont State University Castleton's 2024 graduating class had the unique honor of sharing their commencement with an unexpected yet beloved guest: Max, a charming tabby cat who has become a local celebrity on campus. Max, formally known as Max Dow, has been a familiar face at the university for the past five years, ever since he moved into a nearby home with his human mom, Ashley Dow.

Max's journey to stardom began as a former feral kitten from a nearby town. After moving to a street leading to the campus's main entrance, his curiosity led him to explore the university grounds. It didn't take long for Max to realize that college life can be quite enjoyable for a playful feline. From riding on students' backpacks and scaling the greenhouse to leading campus tours and posing for selfies, Max has become an adored fixture at Castleton.

Max's adventures have earned him a special place in the hearts of students and faculty alike. His presence is so cherished that he was recently honored with the whimsical title of Doctor of Litter-ature by the university's Board of Trustees. While Max may not have walked the stage, his honorary degree and the joy he brings to the campus community are undeniable.

Max's story, filled with affection and humorous anecdotes, continues to make students' lives brighter, particularly during stressful times like finals. As Ashley Dow tells USA Today, "I'm so super happy he makes everyone so happy, he's a great cat and it's awesome."
