A Minneapolis police officer was killed in the line of duty while responding to reports of a shooting on Thursday (May 30). When Officer Jamal Mitchell, 36, arrived at the scene of the shooting, he rushed to help the injured victims.
However, as he went to provide aid, he came under fire.
"As he was attempting to provide medical assistance, he was ambushed," Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans said. "Officer Mitchell was attempting to assist the individual who shot him. It happened very fast, and he ambushed him."
Other officers returned fire, killing the suspect who shot Mitchell.
Mitchell was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Four others were shot, including another police officer and a firefighter. Their injuries were not considered to be life-threatening. The two other victims were rushed to the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
"There are not words to appropriately describe this tragedy. It's the worst call a police chief can receive," Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said.
