Canadian serial killer Robert Pickton, infamous for his crimes in the late 1990s and early 2000s, has died following an assault in prison. The 74-year-old was an inmate at Port-Cartier Institution in Quebec. The Correctional Service of Canada confirmed that Pickton died in hospital due to injuries sustained in the assault, which involved another inmate, on May 19.
A 51-year-old prisoner was detained following the attack.
Pickton was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder in 2007 and sentenced to life in prison with a maximum parole ineligibility period of 25 years. He was charged with the murders of 26 women, many of whom were taken to his pig farm near Vancouver. The remains or DNA of 33 women were found on the farm. Pickton once bragged to an undercover police officer that he had killed a total of 49 women.
The assault on Pickton is under investigation by Canada's correctional service. They aim to examine all the facts and circumstances surrounding the assault, including whether policies and protocols were followed.
