Totally Cool, Inc. recalled "multiple brands of ice cream products" on Monday (June 24) due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. According to the United States Food & Drug Administration, Listeria monocytogenes is "an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems."

Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, stiffness, fever, and severe headaches. Consumption of Listeria monocytogenes could also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The affected products have been distributed and delivered nationwide (including retail locations in Massachusetts), and as of June 24th, no illnesses as a result of consumption were reported. Production of the contaminated products has ceased and individuals who purchased any of the ice cream treats featured on the official list (with matching date and plant information) should avoid consumption. It has yet to be revealed whether or not consumers can return the contaminated products where they were purchased for a refund.
