Alise Willoughby, a three-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist, is one of the most successful women in BMX racing history. Born on January 17, 1991, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Willoughby is set to make her fourth Olympic appearance at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Willoughby's journey to the top of her sport is a testament to her resilience and determination. She began her athletic career as a competitive gymnast and pole vaulter, and started BMX racing at the age of six. Her family, including her two brothers and her father, were all involved in the sport, and her family even ran a track where the kids would train.
In 2006, at just 15 years old, Willoughby became the first woman ever voted Rookie Pro of the Year by BMXer Magazine and the youngest competitor to win the USA BMX Professional Series. She has since won three world titles, tied for the most all-time in women's BMX racing, and has won a total of seven medals at the world championships, more than any other woman.
Willoughby's career has not been without its challenges. She has endured multiple surgeries, including a knee and hamstring reconstruction one year before the London 2012 Olympic Games, and a broken tibia plateau 12 weeks before medaling at the 2014 World Championships. In 2016, her husband, former Australian BMX racer Sam Willoughby, suffered a career-ending injury that left him paralyzed. Despite these setbacks, Willoughby has continued to excel in her sport.
Off the track, Willoughby is known for her philanthropy. She founded the annual Alise Post MS Race for a Cure at her home track in Minnesota to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis. Her family also transformed a vandalized city park into one of the top BMX facilities in the country, Pineview Park BMX in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
