Filmmaker Lee Daniels is facing backlash over comments he made about a white character in his new film The Deliverance.
Ahead of the Friday (August 30) release of The Deliverance on Netflix, Daniels praised actress Glenn Close for her portrayal of a white character in the film named Alberta. Daniels referred to the white woman's role as part of the "fabric" of the Black community.
"Every Black person knows an Alberta. She’s part of the fabric of our community, but we’ve never seen her on screen before," Daniels wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Thank you Glenn for bringing her magnificently to life."
"The Deliverance is out on @netflix this Friday," he added, advertising the movie's release.
Social media users called out Daniels for generalizing the Black experience and speaking for the community with an authority he doesn't have. With the film being based on true events, criticism mounted further over Daniels inserting a white character into a story that centers around a Black family.

Black people have been, and will always be the fabric of our community. We are the inventors, the creators, the authors. At best, we have white allies here to support us… but there is no such thing as a white woman being “apart” of our community when racism still exists.

especially when BLACK grandmothers and other black matriarchs have been holding us down since the beginning
This makes less sense when you realize that the grandma in real life is a whole Black woman.
