Former NFL wide receiver turned CBS Sports analyst Nate Burleson defended pop superstar Taylor Swift, the girlfriend of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, from the backlash of fans criticizing her presence in an NFL social media video teasing the upcoming 2024 season.
“And for all of you guys who are in your feelings — take several seats,” Burleson said during an appearance on CBS Mornings. “Get out of your feelings. “Oh, are you upset? You’re a little mad because Taylor Swift is in the promo? Who cares! Wipe the drool off your tank top, put some pants on, and get out of your momma’s basement. I don’t understand what the big deal is. Every other sport can show celebrities at the game. We show Taylor Swift and you get in your feels! Man, get out of your feelings, man, and watch the game!"

Swift was shown several times supporting Kelce at Chiefs games in a montage of clips from the 2023 season shared by the league on its social media accounts with the caption, "FOOTBALL IS BACK THIS WEEK."

Several critics questioned why Swift, arguably the biggest pop star on the planet, was shown frequently, continuing a polarizing debate that took place throughout the 2023 season amid her relationship with and support of Kelce. The NFL previously reported a historic spike in viewership among a younger female demographic amid Swift's presence at Chiefs games.
Kelce and Swift, both 34, initially went public with their relationship when she attended his game against the Chicago Bears at Arrowhead Stadium last September. The three-time Super Bowl champion famously revealed that he attempted to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his phone number when he attended her concert at Arrowhead Stadium prior to their relationship last summer.
Swift later said that Kelce "very adorably put me on blast" when he acknowledged the situation on his New Heights podcast, which she said "was metal as hell" while being featured as Time Magazine's 'Person of the Year' in December 2023. The Chiefs enter the upcoming 2024 NFL season coming off their back-to-back Super Bowl victories and their third in five seasons.
Kelce signed an extension that will pay him an average annual salary of $17.125 million during the next two seasons, having previously been set to make $12 million in 2024 and $16.25 during the 2025 season. The 34-year-old currently ranks fourth among NFL tight ends in both career receptions (907) and receiving yards (11,328), as well as sixth in receiving touchdowns (74) entering his 12th NFL season.
