Jake Owen shared a video about his decision to stop drinking as he marked three years sober.

“September 16th, 2021 was a pretty big day for me,” Owen said in the clip he shared on Instagram on Tuesday afternoon (September 17). “Three years ago, I decided that was the day. And that was three years ago toady. A thousand ninety-six days ago. Thirty-six months ago. It might honestly be one of the things that I’m most proud of that I’ve ever done in my entire life.”

Owen went on to reflect on his decision to stay sober, saying that he “was not a good person,” when he drank. He also encouraged others to take that step if they’re thinking about it: “I am happy for myself and I’m glad that I made a decision that has not only made my life incredible, but I noticed that it’s inspired other people around me. So, I just wanted you guys to know out there, if you’re considering it, do it. …Life is great, and I’ll be here to be your support if you need it. You know, everybody needs a buddy.”

The “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” singer has previously opened up about his sobriety. Owen got candid about his decision to stay sober on his Instagram story last year. He also shared a link to the Huberman Lab, discussing the impact alcohol has on the body, brain and health. The podcast features discussions of neuroscience with Dr. Andrew Huberman, a tenured professor at Stanford School of Medicine.

Owen said in his Instagram caption on Tuesday that he’s “still working on me, but I’m proud of myself. I also am here for ya if you need anything. I’m also so grateful for the people and friends in my life that have supported me and given me grace. I love y’all.

“To anyone out there struggling or feeling like you’re not enough: remember that progress is still progress, even if it’s slow,” he continued. “Be kind to yourself, and don’t let yesterday’s mistakes define your tomorrow. As the saying goes, ‘Every day is a new beginning.’ Take a deep breath, smile, and start again.”
