Kylie Morgan marked a “first” in her career with a heartfelt reminder to those who “have lost themselves chasing the other person in their relationship,” she explained last week of her newly-debuted duet.
Morgan teamed up with Bryce Vine on a cross-genre collaboration, “Something That You're Not,” that arrived on Friday (October 4). Morgan caught up with iHeartCountry on the red carpet at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards, which took place last week at the legendary Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. The singer-songwriter said “Something That You’re Not” is “my first-ever duet in the pop and R&B world,” and “the first song that I’m releasing that I haven’t written.”
Morgan said it’s “crazy because I’m like a diehard songwriter. But when he [Vine] sent me the song – and I’ve always been a fan of Bryce – when he sent me the song, it’s exactly how I would’ve written it,” she said. “I didn’t wanna change one single thing, and I just felt it in my soul. I feel like it’s going to help so many people. It helped me in the moment. So, I just think it’s a very honest and real song that’s going to make you feel validated.”
“‘Cause birds don’t learn to fly, they just eventually spread their wings/ I think it’s about time that I stop asking you to change / I can only show the door, you gotta be the one to walk/ I already knew, but i guess that I forgot/ You can’t make somebody something that they’re not”
The duet was written by Vine, Grady Lee, Aaron Zuckerman and Erik Belz, and produced by Belz and Zuckerman. It adds to Morgan’s previously-released favorites like “If He Wanted To He Would,” “Two Night Stands,” “Love Like We’re Drunk,” “Break Things,” “Cuss A Little” and more. she delivered her debut full-length album, Making It Up As I Go, last year.
After wrapping up tour dates with Walker Hayes, Morgan is looking ahead to a run of shows with Parker McCollum on the “Burn It Down” artist’s headlining tour. McCollum kicked off the tour after taking the stage at the People’s Choice Country Awards with his newest single, “What Kinda Man.” It’s a full-circle moment for Morgan, who noted she opened for McCollum at Exit/In, a venue in Nashville, years ago. She said connecting with concertgoers in person is “my favorite part of my job.”
“You get to see the impact that you’re making. …It just floors me to see them screaming every word, feeling it, crying,” Morgan told iHeartCountry. “It’s so overwhelming and it’s just a reminder that I was on the other side of that for so many years, seeing people like Shania [Twain] and Reba [McEntire], and now I get to be on the other side of that. It’s just a very fulfilling and blessed experience.
“I’m working on the next project, and it’s gonna be a pretty big one,” Morgan added, teasing the upcoming chapter in her career. “We have a lot of changes happening that I haven’t announced yet, and it’s going to direct towards a few things that have been in the works. So, I’m very excited for the new era. …Stay tuned.”
