At this point, "brat summer" has just become a brat year, because thanks to Charli XCX, "brat" has been named Collins Dictionary's Word of the Year.
On the Collins Dictionary website, "brat" is defined, "'Brat', newly defined in 2024 as 'characterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude', has been named Collins' Word of the Year 2024. Inspired by the Charli XCX album, 'brat' has become one of the most talked about words of 2024. More than a hugely successful album, 'brat' is a cultural phenomenon that has resonated with people globally, and 'brat summer' established itself as an aesthetic and a way of life."
So, Charli's world domination continues.
The original version of Charli XCX's Brat was released over the summer, and featured 15 new songs, followed by a newly-released remix album — titled Brat and it's completely different but also still brat — which sees each song get a new twist from guest appearances by Robyn & Yung Lean, BB trickz, Ariana Grande, The 1975 and Jon Hopkins, Troye Sivan, Addison Rae, Caroline Polachek, Bladee, A.G. Cook, Lorde, The Japanese House, Tinashe, Julian Casablancas, Bon Iver, Shygirl and Billie Eilish.
During an event to promote her remix album, which she live streamed on Twitch, she said of the new music, "One of the reasons I wanted to do this project was because I feel like it's pretty cool to show the infinite possibilities of dance music and music in general. To me, when a song comes out, when you make the song, there's still so many different versions of the song that could be made using just a tiny element of the production from the original or a tiny reference to a lyrical concept or a literal lyric. It can all be completely deconstructed, and then put that together again. Why not? Why just be like, 'It's the album and it's done.'"
So brat.
