Mac Miller, born Malcolm McCormick, produced most of Balloonerism under his moniker, Larry Fisherman, but there are also contributions from Thundercat and his brothers, Ronald and Jameel Bruner. His close collaborator E. Dan of ID Labs mixed the album and Mike Bozzi mastered it. The aforementioned artists worked on the album with Miller during a week-long session between his 2013 album Watching Movies With The Sound Off and his 2014 mixtape Faces. Although it was ultimately shelved, several iterations of the album leaked online even after he passed away in 2018.
Mac Miller's estate teased the album during the first night of Tyler, the Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw last November. They confirmed its existence a few days later and revealed its release date. At the time, the estate said the album was "of great importance to Malcolm." Earlier this month, the estate shared the first single "5 Dollar Pony Rides" and announced a film inspired by the album. According to the description in the trailer, the animated short film "follows a group of school friends who are transfigured by the music of a chord organ and launched into a shadow world. Swallowed by the turtle of time, they must plod through the underbelly of adulthood."
