Milwaukee community members have come together to fund a memorial for Sade Robinson, a 19-year-old Black woman who was killed last year, after a county proposal fell through, per TMJ4.
Robinson was slain in April 2024 after going on a first date with Maxwell Anderson, according to authorities. Her dismembered remains were found scattered around the Milwaukee area. Robinson's car was also found in flames. Anderson is facing several charges including murder and mutilating a corpse in connection to Robinson's death.
A proposal to allocate $7,000 to Robinson's memorial was up for a vote by the Milwaukee County Committee on Parks and Culture. However, a decision was delayed after the committee began receiving "racist emails" from people who expressed outrage over their tax dollars going toward the memorial.
Robinson's family ultimately decided that they would pay for the memorial themselves amid the delay.
Milwaukee residents joined the family's efforts to memorialize Robinson, organizing a fundraiser to raise money for the venture. Earlier this month, dozens of people gathered at Third Street Market Hall for a fundraiser in Robinson's name.
"This is the real Milwaukee," Omar Shaikh, co-owner of Third Street Market Hall, said. "Not the emails and racist emails—this is the real Milwaukee, showing love and support."
A GoFundMe campaign has reached over $36,000 with the help of community donations. The donations are slated to be used to fund the memorial along with supporting scholarships, establishing the first annual Sade's Voice Community Artist Gala Fundraiser event, and launching self-defense classes in Robinson's honor.
"Donations today are important, but they shouldn’t stop today," Shaikh said.
