Cards rough up Petty, sweep doubleheader vs Reds

May 1, 2025

Cardinals 9 Reds 1

Chase Petty got a rude welcome to the big leagues when he served up a 1st inning 421-foot three run homer to Wilson Contreras. Things never got better. He exited with one out in the 3rd inning, ultimately tagged for nine runs.

The Reds momentum of a five game winning streak has been replaced by a doubleheader sweep, outscored 15-1 on the day. Their first home doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Cards since 1959.. Record: 16-15.

Cards entered 2-12 on the road.

Petty: 2.1 IN, 7 H, 9 R, 2 BB, 3 K, HR, 69 pitches.
1st inning: Leadoff BB, H, LO, 3-R HR, 14 pitches in.
2nd inning: Pedro Pages fouled off six straight 2 & 2 pitches before rocketing a solo homer on the 11th pitch of the AB to make it 4-0.
13 foul balls in 2.1 innings/16 batters.

Offense: 7 H, 0 BB, 11 K.
Think this team misses Austin Hays?
Scored in the 6th to snap 16 innings scoreless streak vs Cards.
2nd: 2 on, 0 out 2nd, stranded by Lux-Wynns-Dunn.
I think Steer and McLain will hit. Scratch that. I hope. If they don't, this team is in trouble. There is a group of hot guys that simply are not going to stay hot.

Espinal: 3 H (.317). Does Tito have a McLain/Espinal conundrum?
Elly: 2 H, 14 game hit streak/19 game on-base.
Steer: 1 for 4 (.179). 3 for 42 at GABP. 13 for 50 (.260) on road.
McLain: 1 for 4, K, SB (.159).
Callahan: 0 for 1 off bench. 0 for 2 Game 1.
Hays: Missed both games. Reds ‘monitoring’ his hamstring.

Defense:
Lux made a curious attempt at a line drive to left that went for a double.
Dunn made a nice charging catch in RF.
Marte over-the-shoulder running catch.

Bullpen: 6.2 shutout innings. Retired final 20 in a row.
Suter: Big, big 3.2 innings, 0 R, 40 pitches. Retired last 11. ERA 1.26.
Richardson: Big, big 3.0 innings, 0 R. 26 pitches.

How they scored:
