A kangaroo named Sheila caused an unexpected shutdown of Interstate 85 in Alabama on Tuesday (April 29). The unusual incident unfolded when Sheila, who had escaped from her enclosure, was seen hopping along the interstate in Macon County, between Montgomery and Auburn. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported that Sheila was involved in a two-vehicle crash but was unharmed.
Both southbound and northbound lanes near the 46-mile marker were closed as state troopers, along with Sheila's owner, Patrick Starr, worked to capture the runaway kangaroo. Sheila was eventually tranquilized with a dart and safely returned home. Starr, who owns a pumpkin patch and petting zoo, described Sheila as a personal pet. He assured that Sheila is now back home, no longer sedated, and is eating and drinking normally.
The kangaroo received treatment from the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.
“She’s back home safe. She’s up. She’s not sedated anymore. She’s eating. She’s drinking. She’s not injured,” Starr told the Associated Press. “She’s a sweet pet. I’m glad she’s back home, and I’m glad everybody slowed down a little bit,” he said.
