What's Ahead for a Rebellion in La Jolla
April 30, 2025
A battle over La Jolla is heating up. If you haven’t been keeping up to date, a group of La Jollans want their neighborhood to break away from the city of San Diego and become their own city.
Crazy some are saying. But despite not collecting enough valid signatures by the deadline to seek a public vote on the idea…the agency called the Local Agency Formation Commission or LAFCO gave these rebel La Jollans the okay to find more valid signatures aimed at putting it on a ballot according to the Voice of San Diego.
But the chances of La Jolla ever becoming its own city, are still very slim.
If the idea of La Jolla seceding from the city of San Diego were to ever approved by LAFCO, the entire city of San Diego would have to approve it.
Mayor Todd Gloria is reported as outraged over the latest developments and other city leaders and lots of leaders in the community would very likely line up against it.
There is way too much at stake, not only the tax revenue concerns there would be for the city of San Diego and residents of a new city of La Jolla who would have to pay for services.
La Jolla is as much an important part of San Diego and its reputation and tourism business as San Diego Bay, Mission Bay, Balboa Park, Little Italy, just to name a few. In the end it’s likely these rebel La Jollans will remain part of San Diego, just as most would say it should be.
