John Morgan paid tribute to late country legend Keith Whitley when he joined brothers and podcast hosting duo Dan and Reid Isbell on a recent episode of God’s Country.
The North Carolina-born singer-songwriter — who has written hits for Jason Aldean — delivered a stunning rendition of Whitley’s “I’m Over You.” The Country Music Hall of Fame member released the song on his 10-track studio record, I Wonder Do You Think of Me, in 1989. That album released posthumously just three months after the Kentucky-born country star’s death on May 9, 1989. He was 34. Whitley was known for “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” “Miami, My Amy,” “When You Say Nothing at All,” “I’m No Stranger to the Rain,” and more.
“This week Reid and Dan Isbell host multi #1 songwriter and artist, John Morgan, out in God’s Country. The guys dive in on what it looks like for John to juggle road life with a newborn and how his three kids inspire him to continue his journey as an artist. John hails from North Carolina and they talk through what growing up hunting in the mountains looked like and some updates on how the people in the area are recovering from the 2024 devastating hurricanes. He breaks down what Ginseng hunting looks like in their culture and the different ways people benefit from their findings. John’s Nashville story is the most interesting one you will hear on this podcast and tune in to hear how a random phone call from Jason Aldean changed his life. The episode ends with a Keith Whitley gravorite and we’re still not over it.”
Dan and Reid — who have written music for Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, Scotty McCreery, Jon Pardi, Lainey Wilson and others — started their weekly podcast in early January 2024. Some of the first guests to appear on the show include HARDY, Dustin Lynch, Colbie Caillat and others.
“One of our favorite things about country music has always been how intertwined it is with the outdoors,” Dan and Reid Isbell said in a statement when God’s Country launched. They hope to “bring the outdoor enthusiast or country music lover an up close and personal look into the minds of some of the best songwriters and artists of the genre — a place where they can be honest about struggles, relationships, their connection to the outdoors, the music business, family, whatever they feel comfortable talking about. We can’t wait to see where this partnership will lead and who this podcast will reach.”
