Rodney Hinton Jr., 38, has been charged with aggravated murder after allegedly using his car to fatally strike a Cincinnati sheriff’s deputy on Friday (May 2). The incident, which happened less than a day after his son,18-year-old Ryan Hinton was shot and killed by the police, occurred near the University of Cincinnati, where the deputy was directing traffic during commencement ceremonies. Prosecutors claim Hinton deliberately drove into the deputy in a premeditated act.

The emotional toll of the events became apparent during Hinton's arraignment, where his attorney acknowledged the charged atmosphere. The courtroom was filled with law enforcement officers showing support for their fallen colleague. Hinton, who has no prior felonies, is being held without bond until a hearing on Tuesday.

Authorities said that Ryan was fatally shot by officers on Thursday morning. The police responded to a call about a stolen vehicle and encountered four suspects who fled on foot when they arrived. Officials reported that Ryan was armed and pointed his gun at the officets before he was shot. Body camera footage, reviewed by the family, does not clearly show if Ryan pointed a gun at the officer, though police recovered a handgun at the scene.

Two of the other suspects were taken into custody, while the fourth remains on the loose.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his condolences and described the deputy's death as an "intentional act of violence." The deputy, whose name has not been released, had recently retired but continued to serve as a special deputy.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich stated that if the act is confirmed as intentional, the full force of the law will be applied against Hinton.
