Reds lose game and Callihan, get 1 hit

May 6, 2025

Braves 4 Reds 0

Santiago Espinal’s 8th inning leadoff single ended the no-hit bid of 22-year old RHP AJ Smith-Shawver. It was the only hit the Reds would get on the night.

They have now lost three in a row, and five of seven since their five game win streak last week.

Record: 18-18.

Scary moment: Tyler Callihan smashed into the LF foul line wall attempting a diving catch. It was ruled no catch as the ball came out of his glove as he rolled over in pain. Matt Olsen circled the bases for a two run inside-the-park-homer. By rule, he must voluntarily release the ball from his glove. I have no idea what to make of Francona’s non-reaction to the umpire ruling. Callihan left the game with what was later ruled a fractured left forearm.

Offense: 1 H, 4 BB, 6 K. One run the last 18 innings.

BB: Lux 2, McLain, Steer, Stephenson.
Lux: 2 BB, 1 for 21, down to .294
Elly: 23 game on-base streak ends
Good thing Austin Hays is due back Friday.

Braves now 16-4 when scoring at least 4 runs….0-14 when scoring 3 or fewer.

Singer: 6 IN, 7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 102 pitches. Dealt w/ traffic early and often + hard contact. 5 balls off bat at 99.8 mph+
29 pitch/4 run 3rd. He’s gone at least six innings in 4 of 7 starts.

Bullpen:
Barlow. 1.0. He’s appeared in 17 of 36 games. On pace for 77.
Mey: 1.0

How they scored:
They didn’t….for the fifth time this season.

Defense: +/-
Fraley nice running/sliding catch in foul territory
McLain nice field/throw from behind 2nd in the outfield grass

IL move: It will either be Will Benson (LHB) or Rece Hinds (RHB) getting the call from Louisville.
