A woman is being accused of being a "Karen" after she attempted to block a Black apartment resident from retrieving his package from the mailroom.
A now-viral TikTok video shared by @jaden_avenido captured the tense exchange between the woman, who appeared to be working the apartment mailroom, and the resident, who didn't know the access code to retrieve his mail.
The woman seemingly didn't believe the man was an apartment resident because he didn't have the code.
“Why are you being so difficult? I just need my package," the resident said.
Despite the man repeatedly stating that he lived in the apartment, the woman remained silent and intensely stared at the resident.
The confrontation between the two was interrupted when Nikki, the property manager, walked into the mailroom.
“Hey, Nikki,” the woman said, addressing the property manager. “We have this gentleman here who’s trying to get in. He doesn’t have a code.”
“He doesn’t even know he needed a code. I let him into the mailroom, and I’m at a liability, but he can’t produce a code," she added.
The manager immediately confirmed that the man was an apartment resident.
“He lives here,” Nikki said, adding “Yeah, he does" as the room fell silent.
“Nikki knows me," the apartment resident chimed in.
The manager ended the tense interaction by offering to help the resident.
“But I can help him,” Nikki told the unidentified woman. “But I appreciate it.”
“Yeah, that would be great if you could help this gentleman,” the woman responded.
The video ended with the manager and resident walking into an adjacent room where he could retrieve his package.
TikTok users were divided in their response to the video. Some called out the "Karen" for not believing the Black man lived in the apartment, while others said she was right to not let him have access to the mail without the necessary code.
"I'm sorry. I don't want anyone in my mailroom without a code either. If you live there, you should know the code. Every situation isn't a Karen situation," one TikTok user commented.
"You know she was mad mad when she said 'he lives here'😂," another wrote.
"No apology and notice the change in her tone once she found out he lives there. From condescending to silence," a third person said.
"Nah people be stealing apartment packages all the time.. she right for asking for a code," another user chimed in.
