A Minnesota woman caught hurling the n-word in a viral video has raised over $600,000 "to help protect her family" from backlash, CBS News reports.
In the video, a man, identified as Sharmake Omar, confronted the woman about calling his child the n-word at Roy Sutherland Playground in Rochester, Minnesota. Video shows the woman hurling the racial slur at Omar and admitting to calling his child the n-word.
The woman started a fundraiser "to help protect her family" after video of her racist tirade went viral. The fundraiser garnered over $600,000 in donations. According to the description of the online fundraiser, the woman said the kid stole from her child's diaper bag. Omar has denied the allegation.
The Rochester branch of the NAACP created a GoFundMe page to raise money to support Omar's child and family. The fundraiser raised over $340,000.
"Public parks should be safe, inclusive spaces for children and families—not sites of hate and trauma," the NAACP said in a statement.
The Rochester Police Department launched an investigation into the incident and is sharing its findings with the city's attorney's office. Minnesota's Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) urged local law enforcement and the FBI to step in to help protect Omar's family, who are reportedly being targeted online.
"It is truly sad that this alleged racist harasser is finding support nationwide for her reported use of the n-word against an innocent child," Jaylani Hussein, executive director of CAIR-MN, said in a statement.
