A terrifying encounter in the United Kingdom left dog walker Laura Vaughan, 51, with severe injuries after a half-ton Hereford cow attacked her. While walking her cockapoo, Zayna, Vaughan was headbutted to the ground and trampled by the cow, sustaining two broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a deep leg wound shaped like a "Nike tick." Vaughan said that the cow charged toward her when she inadvertently crossed between the cow and her calf.
The attack, which lasted 30 seconds, ended when a passerby bravely intervened, distracting the cow and allowing Vaughan to escape. Other walkers assisted her and called emergency services. Vaughan was hospitalized for four days, receiving X-rays and a CT scan to assess her injuries.
According to Express, Vaughan's experience highlights the dangers of walking near cattle, especially when calves are present. The Agriculture Industry Advisory Committee reports that between 2019 and 2023, there were 22 fatalities involving cows in the UK.
Vaughan advises others to avoid walking through fields with cows and to carry a first aid kit and a phone with a spare battery pack. She hopes sharing her story will prevent similar incidents in the future.
