A single father was reportedly ambushed and killed by a woman he connected with on Instagram and was planning to take on a date, PEOPLE reports.
Jarrell Pryor, 26, a single dad to his three-year-old daughter, Honey, wrapped up his shift at the warehouse in Indianapolis, Indiana in January before planning to have a night out with a woman named Alexis Hawkins, who he met through social media.
Pryor had intended to take Hawkins out to dinner at a restaurant. However, Hawkins seemed to be in a hurry, so the pair went to McDonald's and then the liquor store.
During their night out, Hawkins was allegedly texting her real boyfriend and planning the ambush.
Pryor was found in a pool of blood outside of his car less than two hours after he and Hawkins met in person. He was shot several times and taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Pryor's phone was found at the scene, which led investigators to unravel what they believe was a sinister plot by an apparent serial scammer.
Two weeks after Pryor's death, police found Hawkins, who denied any involvement in the shooting. Hawkins said she had no memories of that night other than hearing gunshots and running for safety.
“[There’s] no weapon to say I did anything. My fingerprints aren’t on anything,” she told authorities.
However, Hawkins later asked for a lawyer when detectives mentioned her text to an unnamed person about needing money and making a "play real fast" that night.
Hawkins and her boyfriend, 18-year-old Brian Winston Jr., were charged with murder and attempted robbery. The pair remain in custody, but they are maintaining their innocence.
“He had so many plans,” Pryor's mom, Tamekia Wiley, said of her son. “He always wanted to better himself.”
