5/13/25 Blog: Motorcycle Deaths Head Upward, Plus Our Futurist Thomas Frey

IT'S DANGEROUS TO RIDE A MOTORCYCLE IN COLORADO And the Common Sense Institute has a new study to prove it. DJ Summers joins me today at 2:30 to talk about this study that shows that a disproportionate number deaths in road accidents are motorcyclists. DJ has the details on this new report about how declining traffic enforcement is making the roads less safe for most and much less safe for those on bikes.

WE'VE LOST OUR POPULAR CULTURE Let's not forget that the phrase "pop culture" means popular culture and it used to refer to those things that we ALL watched or knew about like the finale of MASH or the season premiere of Dallas where they revealed Who Shot JR??? Our favorite futurist Thomas Frey is on to talk about how highly personal algorithms have siloed us into so many different spaces that we don't have those cultural touchstones anymore like we used to. We will also talk about how AI is the future of teaching and learning, though I've got a column later in the blog about one teacher leaving the profession because of the reliance of kids on tech now. CRIME IS DOWN IN DENVER AND AURORA But unfortunately for Denver it is far too visible for people to FEEL like crime has gone down, but the numbers are undeniable. From 9News:

In Denver, homicides have declined 58% through the first three months of the year compared to the same period in 2024, with 10 homicides reported through the end of March versus 24 in the same time period last year. Aurora has experienced a similar trend, with homicides dropping 36% from 11 to 7 during the first quarter.

Those are SIGNIFICANT drops but when you have people being stabbed on the 16th Street Mall it's hard to see it in Denver. I've also got this story about residents near a parking lot in the Ballpark district who say crime is rampant and windows are being shot out of apartment windows so there's that. The Mayor's office issued a statement so dismissive it's almost unbelievable but his Communications office is the worst I've ever seen so this is not surprising. They just resent the new Downtown Security plan to people who signing petitions asking for help. That's as tone deaf as one can get but very on brand for this mayor's office.

OUR LEFTY SUPREME COURT OKAYS BOULDERS SUIT AGAINST ENERGY PROVIDERS And I can't WAIT to see this one play out in court. The City of Boulder is suing Exxon and Suncor for damage to their community because of global warming. I'm sure they have lots of stories about man made climate change, but I guarantee that Exxon has a slew of experts that will blow their "science" to kingdom come because the "science" doesn't explain a LOT of climate change and there are holes so big you can drive a truck through them. I can't wait for climate scientists to take the stand and be forced to explain why temperatures have been stable for the last twenty years while CO2 continued to rise. I can't wait. This is actually a pretty big disaster for Exxon because it could open the floodgates to every liberal enclave in the country to sue them. I also can't wait to see how much money Boulder wastes on this. There was no doubt our hard left, often overturned Supreme Court would put their stamp of approval on this, as they put the "activist" in activist justices.

TRUMP IS OFF TO THE MIDDLE EAST To shore up our already strong ties with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and our apparent new bestie Qatar. Qatar has a long history of financing terror and looking the other way as terror financiers found a home there. That being said, they HAVE made strides over the last eight years to pass legislation to clean up the money laundering for terror groups they've allowed for so long. I hope they mean it, but I still think accepting a plane from them is an awful, rotten idea. This part caught my eye:

Trump "sees the Gulf as they see themselves, as a real fulcrum of global power," Jon Alterman, the Middle East Program Chair at Center for Strategic and International Studies, told ABC News.

"A lot of people in the world think the Gulf is an outlier. A bunch of small, wealthy states that rely on the United States for security, protection. The Gulf sees itself differently, and the president is suggesting he sees the Gulf differently," Alterman said.

They do have a lot of power and if we are going to effectively deal with Iran we need all of them on our side. We know that Iran was cheating on the Obama Iran deal from the outset, so if we want to bring them to the table we've got to make sure they understand they are increasingly isolated from their neighbors.

WHEN YOU CALL FOR HELP AND NO ONE LISTENS There was a house fire in Lakewood recently at a house that had become a nuisance to the neighborhood. So much so that neighbors repeatedly called police, the DEA, code enforcement, etc, and NOTHING WAS DONE. Why do we even HAVE code enforcement if no one is going to do anything? This kind of story should unnerve all of us because that house next door could sell to anyone at anytime.

WHY DON'T OUR NATIONAL PARKS ASK FOR VOLUNTEERS? There is no doubt we love our parks. So when I saw this story about billboards being put up by labor unions mad that federal parks employees had been let go I had to ask, why not get volunteers to fill some roles? Why not be proactive and ask people to step up? Tell them we need help and see what happens? I bet in Colorado there would be a slew of retirees who would be happy to man visitor's centers and whatnot. I'm just saying.

SENGERBERGER V. MARRERO ISN'T A FAIR FIGHT Because Jimmy Sengenberger in this column reminds us of all the stupid crap the Denver Public School Board and it's hapless Superintendent have been up to in recent years. It's not pretty and should be super embarrassing to certain board members obsessed with race over student achievement. That being said I bet it's not because they have no shame.

IF YOU EVER WANTED TO LIVE NEXT TO LIONS AND TIGERS You may get your chance as new homes may be built next to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg. The facility is super worried about this, as their animals can be loud and stinky and attract all sorts of scavenging birds that homeowners may not be ready for. The worry is that people will move there and complain, which is not a crazy thing to worry about.

I wish they weren't right. 9 News points out that even though the Rockies stink terribly, because of rules about how many times you can have a top ten draft pick the highest they will pick is 10th this year. For a team that is allegedly a draft and develop team this would be devastating but their talent scouts are so bad it won't really matter. I'm sure whoever they want will still be there at 10.

A TRANSHAUSEN MOM CELEBRATES USING COLORADO TO DESTROY HER CHILDREN Hooboy this story is not good. A clearly mentally ill woman decided she was a dude. Fine, she's a grownup. But then she decided BOTH her sons (who were 5 and 7) were girls and wanted to put them on hormones and cut off their boy parts and to do so against the father's wishes, she moved to Colorado and then made this fun video celebrating being able to mutilate her children. Transhausen is what we call crazy parents who decide their literal children are trans so they can cart them around like a new purse to impress all their friends. Mengele would be proud and Colorado has facilitated all this.

THIS IS BECAUSE BEING FAT CAN LEAD TO CANCER This story about weight loss drugs reducing cancer is interesting. We know there is a line between obesity and cancer and a bunch of other lifestyle related diseases so it stands to reason that drugs that help you lose weight would reduce the incidence of cancer, right? But a study of people who lost weight with bariatric surgery showed THAT wasn't as effective as preventing cancer as the drugs, but I'm always skeptical of things that say "we PREVENTED" something because how do they know those people would have gotten cancer otherwise?

DOES THIS LEAD TO BURNOUT? I'm not sure but I guess it's a good baseline. I've found that working your butt off and feeling like no progress is being made is a huge problem. Watch below or click here.

This as French actor Gerard Depardieu was found guilty of groping women on a set in France. He got a suspended sentence and a piddly fine. Diddy is so, so much worse.

DAVID HOGG COULD BE BOUNCED FROM HIS DNC VICE CHAIR POSITION And I think this is HILARIOUS and a big reason why Democrats are shedding young men like my dog Jinx sheds fur this time of year. We are raising a generation of kids who don't care about anything, can't read, and use technology to cheat. They won't be able to do a single thing in the real world. This is a perfect example of technology leaping past us before we can figure out how to use it for good.
